The Melody: Spring 2020

The Days are getting longer, time for Kesley Lu.

There is something electrifying about human movement: it can be smooth like silk, articulate, formulated, and even artistic. In some fantastical way, Kelsey Lu is able to encapsulate this thought and project it through her music. Her instrumentals are a creeping sway, while her vocals are a mix of a gentle hand on your cheek and a slap in the face (to understand what I’m trying to convey I suggest you listen to “Rebel” then “Foreign Car” immediately after). Ms. Lu understands her audience, yet, at the same time, she controls them. She is exhilarating and equally intoxicating. Born to a family of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Kelsey Lu escaped their strict control to attend the University of North Carolina School of Arts and launched her career from there. In fact, her résumé is nothing short of amazing: her debut EP “Church” was recorded in a church; she has orchestrated the artistic vision of artists like Blood Orange, Florence + The Machine, and Solange; she often plays the cello whilst providing vocals in her music; and her cover of “I’m Not In Love” has also been featured in the Euphoria soundtrack. When listening to a Kelsey Lu record, one can expect depictions of sex, love, and pain. She is emotional, gentle, and a dominant force all at once. She is the spring field that you run through. She is the flower that blooms even during the storm. She is a pastel pink and blue room that heightens your nostalgia. She eases your nerves like a cup of tea out in the garden. She is the morning breeze that infiltrates your clothes and onto your skin. She is the passionate love you have with your soulmate. Kelsey Lu is spring.
