Milan Fashion Week FW20 Street Style: Ciao to Striking Patterns, Bold Colours, Texture Mixing and Supersize Accessories

 Article by Kaitlyn Lai

While Milan Fashion Week drew to a quiet close with Prada’s and Jil Sander’s demure and simplicity on the catwalk, Milan’s sidewalks tell a different story. Fluorescent hues, eye-catching prints, statement accessories and jumbles of textures dominate the sideline scene. Here are some of my favourite looks from Milan’s wonderfully colourful chaos last week.

“Ow, she’s a brick house” with a stylish spin

Evidently, less is not more. She styled the bold Flora motif of Gucci GG Flora wool jacquard cardigan with even bolder colours and patterns: a crimson top, patchwork skirt, emerald green Lamé GG socks, embellished the look with a blue sequin hat – and it works. She takes “I’m Gucci” to a whole new level. Find me anyone else who can pull off this look – I doubt you can.

Print VS Attitude

I don’t know what is more striking in this photo, the prints on their clothes or their personality.

You should see me in a crown

Louis Philippe de Gagoue is the walking embodiment of ethnic tradition meets retro. His signature crown consists of two separate head pieces layered on top of one another: one from Côte d’Ivoire and one from India – styled with an 80’s windbreaker and leather pants, he made photographers stop in their tracks just with his back.

No bag is too big

A few months ago, Jacquemus’ Mini Le Chiquito Bag took the fashion world by a storm. From the numerous sightings of Bottega Veneta’s Tapioca Maxi BV Jodie on Milan’s streets, it looks like the next it-item will have an even bigger impact, literally. The scarlet gloves and the aqua ring give the look the extra oomph.

Fierce but fancy

While the leather and the glasses match her piercing look and assertive pose, the cream patterned gilet embellished with gold buttons and her pearl necklace gives the outfit a softer touch. And of course, you can’t go wrong with a bright pink lip, especially when it matches your gloves. Who run the world?

Blue Bliss

My favourite monochromatic look of the week. The blue of her outfit contrasts with her orange eyeshadow, making that fierce expression pop.

Wildly Anonymous

She might not have seen the crowd, but the crowd definitely saw her. This is the only way one should wear animal print – if you go wild, you go all the way.

Ain’t hiding with neutrals and shades

Afraid of disappearing into the crowd while wearing neutrals? Well learn from these two – donned in brown and beige hues from head to toe, they certainly did not go incognito in the midst of colours by mixing up different textures.

Twinning is winning

Ami and Aya Suszuki dominated the front rows of Milan Fashion Week with their pink hair and identical outfits. Turning up to an event only to see another woman wearing the same outfit – a fashion faux pas, correct? False. Not when you’re a twin.
