Rethinking Your Winter Wardrobe
Article and Photoshoot by Kat Koehne
With this season’s holiday sales and cold weather, it’s tempting to buy a whole new wardrobe to bundle up in. But, with some creative thinking, you might find exactly what you’re looking for already sitting in your closet.
The fashion industry’s consumerist marketing has convinced us that we need to buy new pieces for every season in order to be well suited for both the weather and the current trends. In an attempt to break this cycle I challenged myself to rework some of my favorite spring/summer pieces into winter appropriate outfits which are kind to both the environment and my wallet. Unsurprisingly, it’s all about layering. Hopefully these looks not only inspire me, but you as well to rethink the ways you can style pieces of your own.
Blue sweater and silk skirt
One of my favorite pieces is a classic silk skirt that keeps me cool during the summer. I paired it with a cropped sweater, tights, and knee high boots to keep me warm. Just throw on a cozy coat and you’re ready to go.
Maxi dress and faux fur coat
This boho maxi dress reminds me of warm days on the beach. Add a long sleeved shirt underneath, tights, gloves, and a long matching coat and it’s ready to remind you of crisp winter mornings.
Pink skirt and sweater
A pleated skirt and cropped cardigan became a classic pairing this summer, but with a sweater, tights, chunky boots, and a fitted wool jacket it’s perfectly fall appropriate as well.
White dress and grey car coat
An airy white dress is one of my summer staples. While it was tricky to find a way to make this piece warm enough for Scottish weather, it’s not impossible. I put a shirt underneath the dress for an extra layer, but the key was over the knee boots which are much warmer than tights! Because this dress has a lot of volume, I also chose a tailored cashmere coat to give me more shape.
Crop top and flare jeans
Knitted crop tops also made an appearance this summer. To make the top feel more like a sweater, I paired a matching cardigan with it. Although this was probably my coldest outfit, a big puffer solved the issue easily.
