FS2024: Looking Towards the Future

Words and Images by Claire Ferguson, Editor-in-Chief

You might describe FS as The Met Gala of St Andrews. This eagerly awaited show, with its ever-evolving themes, promises a spectacle of creativity and glamour year after year. With the announcement of this year’s theme, “Future,” FS unveiled a compelling editorial titled “Web 1.0 Static,” which draws a visual parallel to the cyber-reality of The Matrix. The fashion narrative within these images is one of cyberpunk sophistication - featuring boiler suits and bug sunglasses against a backdrop of rich, binary-esque greens. The editorial employs techniques like double exposure and motion blur to evoke the raw, unrefined feel of the early internet. Its nostalgic tone recalls last year’s theme - “Revival,” which looked through previous decades of fashion. The photoshoot bridges the gap between this year and last - suggesting a continuity between the digital past and the future of fashion.

Over 1,500 guests gathered on Lower College lawn last Saturday to attend FS2024. The show, starting at 8:00 PM, encouraged early arrival with staggered times based on ticket tier, ensuring a smooth entry for all. VIP guests enjoyed champagne upon arrival, complemented by the convenience of three Union bars for additional refreshments throughout the evening. The corporate section, positioned on a raised platform, offered unparalleled views, while the VIP section hugged the runway’s far end and sides, offering an intimate perspective of the fashion on display. Standard ticket holders, positioned towards the runway’s other end, found that early arrival might secure a coveted front-row spot. The addition of an elevated platform to the runway layout this year was a thoughtful touch, enhancing visibility for all attendees.

“LOOK 6 - The Ballgown” by Valentin Schwarz

The show commenced with an impressive choreography sequence which set the energy levels high. Models initially paraded in all-black outfits, though soon transitioned to reveal more colorful and avant-garde looks. A standout piece was a gathered silver metallic dress, “LOOK 6 - The Ballgown” from Valentin Schwarz’s MA Graduate Collection at Aalto University. The black ropes hanging from the dress allude to Schwarz’s innovative patterning technique which allow his garments to be adjusted to fit any body type.

The first half of the show lasted 45 minutes and was followed by a brief intermission and live auction. The second half of the show began with a steamy lingerie section, featuring looks from Cou Cou Intimates and Peninsula Swimwear. Another impressive look came from Sadie Worrall: a mini skirt and matching bandeau top made entirely from recycled aluminum cans. Ava G Knits, making a return to FS, presented a series of ultra-feminine outfits and matching accessories, firmly establishing that bows are still very much in. All of her looks are handcrafted in knit crochet. Her standout piece, a bright pink top and shorts set with a flowing ruffle train, was a testament to the skill and creativity behind her designs.

The show concluded with a final walkthrough, commemorating the arduous work of the models and committee members. For those who managed to avoid the Moët splash zone, it was a night to remember. The FS team’s coordination of such an amazing show was evident in the seamless transition to the afterparty, where the celebration continued well into the night.

This year, the show not only dazzled with its array of looks from over 40 designers and brands but also emphasized a commitment to sustainability, resonating deeply with FS’ vision. The event was more than a showcase of fashion; it was a testament to the fusion of innovation and sustainability that FS strives to promote. The F4TE Week initiative, (“Fashion 4 The Earth”), now a hallmark of FS, was exemplified through the works of Schwarz with his versatile attire, Ava G’s detailed crochet work, and Sadie Worrall’s inventive use of recycled materials. These reflections in the aftermath of FS2024 highlight not just the event’s immediate impact but its enduring commitment to setting a precedent for sustainable fashion, embodying the essence of what the future of fashion should aspire to be.

To date, FS has raised over £600,000 for charity. This year, the group continued its support for Genetic Alliance UK. Donate here: https://gofund.me/4332f69f
